A thief made off with more than $20,000 worth of NASCAR memorabilia from a storage unit over the weekend, and anyone with information about the crime could receive a cash reward.
A preliminary investigation shows that at least eight units were hit, but only one has been reported thus far.
Clifford Harris, of Marion, told McDowell County sheriff’s deputies that the culprit broke into his building at Economy Mini Storage, at 1227 U.S. 70 West, and took the following: 1,500 small NASCAR Hot Wheels cars; 500 NASCAR diecast race cars (200 Dale Earnhardt cars, 30 Davey Allison, 30 Richard Petty, 15 Bill Elliott and various others); a Davey Allison NASCAR telephone; and 50 figurines. All of the items were still in their original packaging. The total value of the memorabilia is estimated at $21,810. A truck bed toolbox was also found to be missing.
The theft occurred sometime between 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 24 and 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 27.
The suspect’s vehicle, a light-colored Ford truck, was caught on camera at Economy Mini Storage.
Anyone with information concerning the theft, suspect or whereabouts of the memorabilia is asked to call Detective Paul Alkire at 652-2237 or McDowell County Crime Stoppers at 65-CRIME (652-7463). Now, you can also text your tips to Crime Stoppers. Text MCDOWELLTIPS and your information to 274637 (CRIMES). With Crime Stoppers, your identity remains anonymous, and you could receive a cash reward.
