Nine arrested for DUI during weekend enforcement efforts

A total of nine people were arrested for driving under the influence following enforcement efforts over the weekend beginning with St. Patrick’s Day on Thursday.

Redlands Police assigned eight additional officers to DUI patrol on St. Patrick’s Day, Thursday, March 17, and conducted a sobriety checkpoint on Friday night in the northbound lanes of Orange Street, between Stuart and Pearl avenues.

On St. Patrick’s Day and the following morning, three people were arrested for driving under the influence, including 25-year-old Jocynthia DeJesus Silva, of Redlands, who crashed her 2010 Chevrolet Camaro into a curb, a City sign and a palm tree shortly before 3 a.m. Friday and 52-year-old John Carey Shaw, who led officers in a chase onto the freeway before they turned the pursuit over to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP used a spike strip to stop the vehicle on the 210 freeway in Laverne and arrested the driver.

On Friday night, 377 vehicles passed through the sobriety checkpoint. Three drivers were arrested at the checkpoint, including 21-year-old Trad Joseph McMahon, of Mentone, who drove through the checkpoint and over a pattern of safety cones before trying unsuccessfully to hide in a nearby parking lot.

Three other drivers were arrested by patrol officers for driving under the influence, including 28-year-old Hamilton Grant Criswell, of San Antonio, Texas, who also was charged with possession of Ecstasy pills.

Funding for these operations was provided by two grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Remember, everyone is encouraged to help keep our roadways safe; Report Drunk Drivers – Call 911!
